COURSES AM/A1/A2/A (DAS) DIRECT ACCESS SCHEME
Licence Training and Tests
The “L-Test” conducted by the DVSA, is a two-part test. Both modules 1 and 2 must be completed to obtain a licence.
Module 1 (off-road practical test):
Using the stand
Manual handling
Slalom
Figure of eight
Slow ride
U-Turn
Cornering with a controlled stop
Cornering with an emergency stop (minimum 32mph/50km)
Cornering with an avoidance exercise (minimum 32mph/50km)
For Mopeds the speed requirements are 30kph/19mph. Please see diagram.
Module 2 (on-road practical test):
The eyesight test
Safety check and balance questions
Your use of the controls
Moving off
Rear observation
Giving signals
Acting on road signs and signals
Use of speed
Making progress
Hazards
Junctions and roundabouts
Overtaking
Meeting and passing other vehicles
Crossing the path of other vehicles
Following at a safe distance
Positioning and lane discipline
Pedestrian crossings
Selecting a safe place to stop
Awareness and anticipation
Independent riding
AM
This licence is for automatic moped users, no more than 50cc with a speed of up to 45km/h, 28mph. This enables riders to carry a pillion.
To hold your AM licence, you must have completed the following:
CBT course
Motorcycle Theory and Hazard Perception Test
Module 1, off-road practical test
Module 2, on-road practical test
You must be 16 or over to complete this licence course.
A1
This licence is for geared or auto bikes between 120cc-125cc, not exceeding 11kW (14.6bhp) with a speed of up to 90km/h, 55mph.
To hold your A1 licence, you must have completed the following:
CBT course
Motorcycle Theory and Hazard Perception Test
Module 1, off-road practical test
Module 2, on-road practical test
You must be 17 or over to complete this licence course.
A2
This licence is for geared or auto bikes of at least 395cc, with an engine power between 20kW (26.8bhp) – 35kW (46.6bhp). The power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.2kW/kg.
To hold your A2 licence, you must have completed the following:
Motorcycle Theory and Hazard Perception Test
Module 1, off-road practical test
Module 2, on-road practical test
You must be 19 or over to complete this licence course.
The incentive of taking this test between the age of 19 and 21 is that you can take a progressive access course onto a full A License after holding an A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years.
A – Also known as Direct/Progressive Access
This licence is for geared or auto bikes of at least 595cc, with an engine power of at least 40kW (53.6bhp).
To hold your A licence, you must have completed the following:
Motorcycle Theory and Hazard Perception Test
Module 1, off-road practical test
Module 2, on-road practical test
You must be 24 or over to complete this licence course or have held an A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years (Minimum age 21).
